Mountain Bike Trail Design

We have designed and built trail since the birth of the MTB trail centre and were riding off road long before. We have over 25 years of experience in MTB trail development.

We have designed and built trail since the birth of the MTB trail centre and were riding off road long before. It happened in our backyard at Coed y Brenin, the UK's first dedicated MTB trail centre arrived. We were involved from day one, as the local off road users that needed 'managing' through to being involved in designing, building, promoting and managing them. We have over 25 years of experience in MTB trail development.

We can provide design services or full design & build services. Core services include:

Planning - Site master plans, feasibility studies, concept plans, project plans, action plans, phased developments, commerciality.

Funding - Fund sourcing, strategies, management, bid preparation & management, audits and cashflow.

Design - Designing trails that perform for the riders and land managers. We can manage and deliver to your project: creativity, originality and progression, manage designer duties under CDM2015, produce site assessments, manage risk management, design sustainably minimising environmental impact, ensure organisation and standards compliance, deliver bills of quantity and detailed specifications, produce CAD drawings, as built drawings and GIS mapping, we offer accountability, client side design supervision or design & build service.

Performance by Design - New trails are a considerable investment and need to perform in terms of land manager requirements. New trails need to attract the intended target market and meet their expectations, only then will it provide the positive social impacts and return on investment required by the investor. Good trail design reduces the risk of a new trail under performing, trail counters provide the evidence of impact of good design.

Upgrades - Trails wear out, trends come and go. Trails often come to a point where they no longer meet the needs of the users and become potential liabilities. We have a portfolio of design upgrades and rebuilds demonstrating that with good planning, design and high quality construction, trails can be designed to perform not only for riders but also for trail managers. Upgrades need to attract new riders and generate repeat use from them, at the same time they need to be sustainably constructed, meet land owner duty of care and meet the managers objectives. These can be wide ranging from requiring, more riders, creating new routes and access, developing a new market, offering a new experience etc… Better to improve what you have than build more!

Planning Applications - We can provide content or manage the entire statutory planning application for your development.

Standards Compliance - We design and build trails to the relevant recognisable standards with good reason. To primarily ensure the safety of riders and equally, to ensure our Clients are protected. We ensure the risk of third party liability claims against the land owners and trail managers we work for, are reduced and managed to an acceptably low level for them. We ensure all of our design work has a full documented paper trail of design reasoning, risk management and standards compliance.

Risk Management - Riding off road trails is a high risk activity, however with good design and paper trails to evidence good decision making and good design, hazards and risks in trail riding can be reduced to an acceptable level without compromising the users need for fun, progression and a big grin factor. We follow VSCG risk management principles and ensure our roles appointed CDM duties fully comply and are evidenced for each project we engage in. We ensure design and construction standards are complied and considers for each and every project.

Maximising Play Value - We have integrated Sport England Sport - Active Design Principles, into our work from their inception, our trail design work on the Hicks Lodge National Forest Cycle Centre is showcased as a cycling design exemplar in the Active Design Case Study.

Trail Construction - We only design & build sustainable trails. Manage your water first and foremost, then build the right trail, for the right user group, in the right place. Understanding and respecting the environment, residents, culture and the landscapes where the trails will be built are founding principles.

We can offer a full design packages or design and build or day rates for on site practical construction management or design supervision. We currently work with two trail construction companies in order to provide a complete design and build and maintenance service.

Trail & Track Management - From emergency planning through to operations manuals, maintenance schedules, signage schemes, safety audits and compliance reports, trail inspections and condition surveys. Accident investigation and reports, managing access and PROW, land owner liability, managing wild trails, business planning and commerciality, events and marketing, car park development and pay and display schemes.
